Hit the ice, get a stretch, buzz around, get some pucks on net. Get a nice glisten goin, eyeball the opponent, couple ‘fuckin rights boys’ as the music plays. Always have to get a good warm up in. Every now and then during said warmup, something happens, maybe it’s beforehand even. I don’t know if it is predetermined, but I assume it’s spur of the moment. But its a glorious moment, where two guys decide to have a dick measuring contest and refuse to be the last off the ice. And tonight, it was two absolutely perfect characters for the show.
A classic mexican standoff between Brad Marchand and Mika Zibenijad. This went on for over TEN minutes. Thats excruciatingly long. Both waiting at the doors as the zamboni rolls out for a fresh game sheet. Mika was taping stick. You wonder if the coaches know this is going down or they’re just in the locker room wondering where the hell their super stars are. I’d hate to have been the intern who has to relay the message to Bruce Cassidy that Marchand is still on the ice playing rock paper scissors. Mika won RPS and there fore won the standoff and hit Marchand with a beautiful wave off the ice.
It really is a fascinating thing to watch these play out. Joe Kelly and Scott Van Slyke had an absolutely legendary one back in 2013.
GAME 6 OF THE NLCS. WORLD SERIES ON THE LINE! This stand off is the goat of standoffs. These two push the limits of standoffs like we have never seen before. It went on for over 3 minutes. The Dodgers were literally on the field warming up. Pitcher throwing his warm up tosses. Umpire ready to say play ball and Joe and Scott are just standing there like the Queens Guard. An absolute fever pitch of a moment meanwhile you got some all time antics going on down the foul lines. Joe Kelly was a G way before he threw at Carlos Correa.
You never know when these will pop up but when they do you just have to appreciate the competition. Two guys ready to lay it all on the line and go to battle and cant even wait till the game starts to get the competitive juices flowing with some good ole fashioned fun.
