1)Novak Djokicvic def. Frances Tiafoe: 6–3, 6(3)-7(7), 7(7)-6(2), 6–3
Tough second round draw for the American. Tiafoe took a set and forced another tie break but it takes a monumental effort to beat Novak and the Serb is just too good. Novak looks to continue to crush American dreams as he moves on to face Taylor Frtiz.
(27) Taylor Fritz def. Reily Opelka: 4–6, 7(8)-6(6), 6(4)-7(7), 7(7)-6(5), 6–2
It’s unfortunate these two had to meet this early on in the tournament. Both guys are 23 year old and have a ton of promise for American tennis so for one to have to eliminate the other is tough. The match itself was great. Opelka needs the random breaks to get his wins and went just 2/16 on break points. Fritz held serve when he needed to and grinded out the tiebreakers to come out on top in this one. It won’t get any easier with Djokivic waiting.
Marton Fucsovics def. Stan Wawrinka: 7–5, 6–1, 4–6, 2–6, 7(11)-6(9)
This was the match of the night until Nick Kyrgios stole the show in the wee hours of the morning. Stan is a fan favorite but he did not have it in the first two sets. He battled to win 3 and 4 and his back hand was on absolute fire. He looked to have Fucsovics dead to rights up 5–1 in the 5th set tiebreaker but Marton dug deep and somehow willed his way to win the tie break 11–9. Just an inspired effort by the Hungairan.
(14) Milos Roanic def. Corentin Moutet: 6(1)-7(7), 6–1, 6–1, 6–4
Neither player could break in the first set and Moutet got the tie breaker, but after that it was all Roanic. He absolutely dominated the final 3 sets, never got broken and just looked great all around once he settled in. Roanic will get a chance to watch his Canadian pals duke it out tonight.
(23) Dusan Lajovic def. Alexander Bublik: 6–4, 7(7)-6(4), 4–6, 6–3
Lajovioc narrowly avoided an upset in round 1, and had his hands full again in round 2, but was able to take care of business in 4 sets. Bublik could only capitalize on 3 of 20 break points and really played a very even match with Dusan, he just couldn’t win some important points he needed to.
Pedro Martinez def. Emil Ruusuvuori: 1–6, 6–3, 6–2, 7(7)-6(5)
Emil came out swinging but Martinez bounced back nicely after a first set beatdown to move on to the third round. Martinez hasnt had too tough of a path to third round and still avoids anyone from inside the top 20 in round 3 as well.
(32) Adrian Mannarino def. Miomir Kecmanovic: 6–1, 6–2, 6–4
Mannarino was simply too much for the young Serbian. Mannarino had the foot on the gas from the start and never let up. With the prospect of a 3rd round tilt with Zverev, a quick 3 setter was just what the doctor ordered.
(6) Alexander Zverev def. Maxime Cressy: 7–5, 6–4, 6–3
Zverev did everything pretty well tonight, did not allow any breaks, and looked better as the match went on. Cressy was a formidable opponent but Zverev was clearly the better player and Cressy could keep up. Mannarino v. Zverev is a great round match.
Nick Kyrgios def. (23) Hugo Humbert: 5–7, 6–4, 3–6, 7(7)-6(2), 6–4
Hands down the match of the night. Kyrgios is the most polarizing figure in tennis but he is also exciting on the court and survived a 5 setter to live another day in his home tournament. The Aussie crowd loves him. Social media loves him. Dominic Theim is going to have his hands full in round 3.
Dominic Theim def. Dominik Koepfer: 6–4, 6–0, 6–2
No sweat for one of the Dominics. Theim is one of the guys who needs to be there to upend the dominance of Djoker and Rafa and he looked the part today. When he is on he is dominant and one of the best in the world. He will have the crowd against him in his next match but i do not think that will matter.
(18) Gregor Dimitrov def. Alex Bolt: 7(7)-6(1), 6–1, 6–2
Dimitrov cruised into round 3 and is playing some very good tennis right now. The big hitting Hungairan is intimidating when he is on but can never seem to break through. His next obstacle is the Spainiard, PCB.
(15) Pablo Carreno Busto def. Jiri Vessey: 6–3, 7(7)-6(3), 2–6, 6–4
SInce RBA is out, its PCB who needs to carry the torch for the 3 named Spainiards. Pablo never plays an easy match, and is always going to be a tough out. We will see how long of a run he make down under.
(11) Denis Shapovalov def. Bernard Tomic: 6–1, 6–3, 6–2
Shapovalov was locked and loaded for his round match and took care of business with ease. There is no doubt he had the 3rd circled with the potential to meet up with fellow Canadian star FAA and that match up is now set. Both of these guy are super talented, super athletic, super exciting Canadians and it is going to be one hell of a bout in round 3.
(20) Felix Auger-Aliassime def. James Duckworth: 6–4, 6–1, 6–2
FAA had the same mindset as Shapovalov. They both wanted this showdown and their second round foe wasn’t getting in their way.
Asian Karatsev def. Igor Gerasimov: 6–0, 6–1, 6–0
This was the most lopsided match of the tournament so far. Karatsev didn’t have to break a sweat. He will need the fresh legs to try and upset Diego Schwatzman nexxt round.
(8) Diego Schwartzman def. Alexandre Mueller: 6–2, 6–0, 6–3
Scharztman, who had a bit of a fight in round 1, didn’t have to stress in round 2. Karatsev is playing good tennis but he will need to play his best to bounce Diego when the Argentine is looking like this,
