Barstool Chicago Draft Recap: 1994 Movies

Phenomenal draft topic for any movie fan. Just a stacked year in film. KenJac, co-host of Lights, Camera, Barstool, and Rear Admiral, co-host of Spittin’ Chiclets, were the perfect guests to have on for the occasion. KenJac is just an endless pit of movie knowledge, but R.A. aint no slouch himself and has some nuggets, as well as fun facts about movies he can drop at any given moment. Carl was so locked in on the Bears he thought they chose ’94 because it was Mitch’s birth year. Carl also got some amazing and much deserved Heitmiezer validation from KenJac. Overall a very fun draft to listen to and you learn a lot about some all time movies. Make sure to vote on the poll on the @BarstoolChicago twitter. The breakdown:

Order:

1- Rear Admiral (2nd draft) 2- Chief 3- Carl 4- KenJac (1st draft) 5- Eddie

Round 1:

Pick1: R.A.- Pulp Fiction

  • Released October 14th, 1994
  • Directed by Quentin Tarantino

Wouldn’t be everybodys 1.1 but you certainly can’t argue this movie at first overall. It’s a clear first round pick and with RA drafting first it boosted the chances of it going first overall, it just seems like an RA movie. I believe RA got to choose first pick so he went and got his man and you just cannot argue Pulp Fiction at being first off the board. You get a full cult following vote with this pick.

Pick 2: Chief- The Shawshank Redemption

  • Released September 22nd, 1994
  • Directed by Frank Darabont, Written by Stephen King

Chief was incredibly happy to get this movie at 2 and rightfully so. Its first overall pick quality but the person drafting first just wanted a different cornerstone to build its team around. Chase Young type value at the second pick.

Pick 3: Carl- Forrest Gump

  • Released July 6th, 1994
  • Directed by Robert Zemeckis

Carl had to pick a lane for how he wanted to build his team. The top 3 best left on the board were all very different and there wasn’t a wrong way to go. Forrest Gump is a beloved movie and Carl made great points about the trio of Forrest, Bubba and Lieutenant Dan. Great movie poster if that ends up being the graphic. Carl makes a point that this draft will be won in the middle rounds and Forrest Gump looks great at 1.

Pick 4: KenJac- Lion King

  • Released June 24th, 1994
  • Directed by Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers

Amazing value at 4. Very well could have gone number 1. An iconic movie. Iconic soundtrack. There was no other choice here for KenJac and obviously not surprising he didn’t miss. It really is a steal and leaves KenJac in a great position in the 4 spot.

Pick 5: Eddie- Dumb & Dumber

  • Released December 6th, 1994
  • Directed by Peter Farrelly

Eddie missed out on the big 4 but this was a no brainer, literally, 5 pick. I think no matter the order of the drafters, Dumb and Dumber is the 5th spot. Dumb and Dumber is a all time comedy and an all time duo. One of the most quotable movies out there. It was a great pick to end the first round. Shout to Eddie for watching it the night before for not the first time.

-There was a clear top 4 and you could argue top 5 but the order they went off the board just depended on the draft order. I think KenJac got the best value at 4. Round 1 was not where you won this draft though. This was a relatively chalk 5 so there’s no grades being thrown out here.

ROUND 2

Pick 6: Eddie- Hoop Dreams (Grade- A)

  • Released October 14th, 1994
  • Directed by Steve Dreams

Eddie had the correct premonition to know he wasn’t getting Hoop Dreams from the 5th spot without taking it on the wrap around. The panel clearly loved the pick and many of the guys were hoping to snag it with their next pick. It is a great way to follow up the goofy Dumb and Dumber.

Pick 7: KenJac- True Lies (Grade- Rocketship emoji)

  • Released July 15th, 1994
  • Directed by James Cameron

Can’t go wrong with a James Cameron movie. Great Movie, great pick. I dont know how great it plays to the crowd and the graphic like some other movies with second round value but it gives KenJac an animated and an action right off the bat to diversify his team with a lot of value left in other categories. Also, Jamie Lee Curtis scene.

Pick 8:Carl- Speed (Grade- Certainly over 50)

  • Released June 10th, 1994
  • Directed by Jan de Bont

This is why Carl wins drafts. Such a great second pick. It’s a great and fun movie, and gets you a ton of votes. It’s a shame Carl’s elite drafting ability gets labeled pandering.

Pick 9: Chief- Quiz Show (Grade- B+)

Strong start for Chief to this draft. Shawshank followed by Quiz Show looks really nice for real movie buff voters but i’m not sure how it plays to the masses, there’s a generation of voters who probably haven’t seen it. That doesn’t make it a great movie or a great pick.

Pick 10: R.A.- Natural Born Killers (Grade- Bang Bang)

  • Released August 29th, 1994
  • Directed by Oliver Stone

You’re in for a trip when you go to RAs movie night but god damn it’s a good one. At the beginning of the draft RA said he was going to draft his best team and he is sticking to his guns in the first two rounds.

-Although he took it off the board slightly early and I’m not sure how many people voting will have seen Hoop Dreams, Eddie wins the second win round leading off with it but not because its the best movie just because of the strategy. All five guys have such a great 1–2 there’s really no separation yet.

ROUND 3-

Pick 11: R.A.- Clerks (Grade- A)

  • Released October 19th, 1994
  • Directed by Kevin Smith

RA cant stop wont stop. To lead off the third round RA just continued to build a perfect RA team and snags Clerks. His first comedy and it just fits his style of team so well. I love that RA fits the bill for the movie too. Store clerk in his younger years, probably smoking lunch break doobies. RA’s first three rounds have him in a great spot.

Pick 12: Chief- Legends of the Fall (Grade- Burrata)

  • Released January 13, 1994
  • Directed by Edward Zwick

Chief had a strong two rounds but eventually the real Chief will always stand up. Legends of the Fall is not coming off the board. Chief had instant regret and rightfully so.

Pick 13: Carl- Ace Ventura Pet Detective (Grade- Laces Out)

  • Released February 4th, 194
  • Directed by Tom Shadyac

Great value here for Carl in the third round and gets a true comedy on the team. Carl said his movie night is going to be a fun time and you can’t argue with that. You need a role player like Jim Carrey when you’re drafting in 94 and Carl got him.

Pick 14: KenJac- Leon the Professional (Grade- B)

  • November 18th, 1994
  • Directed by Luc Besson

KenJac will need his movie people to come out for the vote on this one. Not that it’s in any way a bad pick, it just doesn’t play to the masses. That makes it respectable though. KenJac is drafting his top movies and he wanted to give the proper credit to a great movie.

Pick 15: Eddie- The Mask (Grade- Smockin)

  • Released July 29th, 1994
  • Directed by Charles Russell

Doubling up on Jim Carrey movies. I think for the list Eddie is trying to build its fitting. It is a drop off compared to other movies off the board but we are getting to a thinner list. Eddie will get the TrillBallins vote.

-Chiefs draft went off the rails quickly and RA got the best pick of round 3 with adding Clerks to his team.

Round 4-

Pick 16: Eddie- Little Giants (Grade- Touchdown)

  • Released October 14th, 199
  • Directed by Duwayne Dunham

Eddie showing he’s the youngest of the bunch here. Little Giants is a great kids sports movie for 90s kids. It has staying power, some very memorable characters and scenes. Eddie is running the annexation of Puerto Rico and targeting a younger vote than the other guys but he’s building a list that fits him.

Pick 17: KenJac- Clear and Present Danger (Grade- B)

  • Released August 3rd, 1994
  • Directed by Phillip Noyce

Jack Ryan plays. Harrison Ford plays. Its good 4th round value but KenJac has drafted all WRs since Lion King.

Pick 18: Carl- Blue Chips (Grade- Bag acquired)

  • Released February 18th, 1994
  • Directed by William Friedkin

Carl gets a big time sports movie on the squad. Just really filling out all positions. Consummate draft professional. Putting himself in a position to win this draft.

Pick 19: Chief- D2 The MIghty Ducks (Grade- Quack Quack)

  • Released March 25th, 1994
  • Directed by Sam Weisman

Chief bounces back with a great sports movie pick. I don’t know if it saves his draft after round 3 but it is a phenomenal 4th round pick and some would consider it the top sports movie of the year.

Pick 20: R.A.- Ed Wood (Grade- N/A)

  • Released September 28th, 1994
  • Directed by Tim Burton

I’m upset I can’t comment on this pick because I haven’t seen it. Figured it would happen with 25 picks and at least I made it through 20. RAs first 3 picks were money and KenJac liked the pick so it sounds like RA made a solid 4th round selection.

-Carl is the winner of round 4 here. Chief had a nice bounce back, KenJac got great value, Ed picked a fun movie and i’m sure RAs was great too, but Blue Chips jumps off the board here.

Round 5:

Pick 21: R.A.- The Crow

  • Released May 11th, 1994
  • Directed by Alex Proyas

RA sticks to his morals and builds a roster that specifically fits him. I don’t think these final two picks will help him win the graphic but that doesn’t mean he did have a great draft. RA really is not going to pander, not going to try to win votes, but i think hes got a team hed be very happy about.

Pick 22: Chief- Iron Will (Grade- D)

  • Released January 14th, 1994
  • Directed by Charles Haid

This is how you close out a draft……if youre Chief. When Chief knows he’s done he knows it and that’s when you get a second order of burrata. I love sled dogs, probably a good movie, but you’re not making the poll with Iron Will.

Pick 23: Carl- Blown Away (Grade- C)

  • Released December 3rd, 1994
  • Directed by Stephen Hopkins

Carl was close to being the clear favorite to win this draft. A strong 5th round pick and he really would have had a list that topped the others. However, he left the door open here. This almost leaves him with a 4 man team. A strong 4 man team, but now RA, KenJac and Eddie very much are all in play. Hearing Carl say he was thinking Little Big League here and going Blown Away is tough. Although he already had a sport movie, Little Big League would have been a great 5th.

Pick 24: KenJac- Angels In The Outfield (Grade- OINK OINK)

  • Released July 15th, 1994
  • Directed by William Dear

PANDER ALERT. GIVE THE PIGS THEIR SLOP. What a move too close to the draft from KenJac. Ruthless. But he’s trying to win a draft. He’s got a good list but i didn’t think it would win. This gives him a chance.

Pick 25: Mr. Irrelevant Eddie- Blank Check (Grade- B)

  • Released February 11th, 1994
  • Directed by Rupert Wainwright

Fun pick from Eddie here. I don’t know if it helps win him this draft but i don’t think it hurts him either. Blank Check is fuckin cool and thats a fact.

My initial reaction after Mr. Irrelevant was picked was that Carl was looking at his 18th win. After Ed did the re-read of everyone’s draft, it really made it clear that the only clarity was the Chief would not win. No one list read in order immediately jumped out over the other 3. RA, Carl, KenJac and Eddie all had built teams that could win this draft and that will seriously spread the vote around. Like I said earlier, RAs draft is great, he just loses me personally with the final two picks, it is not that they are bad. Carl may have the strongest 4 but I think he has the weakest 5th round pick. KenJac has a great list of names but maybe not the best diversity across the board. And Eds Little Giants/Blank Check paired with two Jim Carrey comedies leaves himself with what RA referred to as pupcorn style list. This is a draft you ABSOLUTELY will be swayed and almost need to be swayed by the graphic. KenJac will be in charge of it this week and movie posters and the visual will definitely play into who gets swung where.

OFFICIAL POLL PREDICTION AFTER SEEING THE GRAPHIC:

Carl- 27%

KenJac- 26%

Ed- 24%

Rear- 23%

Carl a razor thin margin across the board. His first four, his draft reputation and his reasoning to not pander and take Little Big League all come together to get him another win. I think the guests are always a little behind the 8 ball when trying to win the vote over the Chicago guys so that’s why KenJac falls short. I think Eddie’s list will win more of the vote than you’d think and RAs won’t be appreciated. Chief, nice playing.
