I’M SHIPPING UP TO CHICAGO. How’s she cuttin, boyos? Just full of deliria and excira when I heard the draft topic. When St. Pattys day rolls around you get all riled up to act a maggot with the fellas. Tip back some of the black stuff and get banjaxed. Since it was cancelled last year it seems like it’s been a donkeys age since the last time we got to celebrate. The Irish culture is a proud one and they know how to have a craic. This draft had me all gassed up. Alright let’s crack on.
Guest:
Captain Cons (TYFYS)
Draft Categories:
1 Movie. 1 Actor. 1 Fictional Character. 1 Food or Beverage. 1 Prop.
Draft Order:
- Chief 2. Captain Cons 3. Eddie 4. WSD 5. Carl
ROUND 1
Pick 1: Chief- Guinness (Food/Beverage)
Grade- Sláinte!
I did not have a clear 1.1 that I thought would go off the board but Guinness is absolutely worthy of the top spot. Delicious, smooth, healthy. The Toucan is a very underrated mascot. The first thing I think of when you’re talking Irish things is beers, and the first beer I think of is Guinness. Also a great dog name for a large breed.
Pick 2: Cons- Boondocks Saints (Movie)
Grade- VERITAS AQUITAS
I have the DVD. Had the poster up in my dorm. It is a VERY irish movie. Dont hate on the movie itself either. Sure it’s not the next pick, but Willem Dafoe is absolutely phenomenal in it. The brothers are an incredible duo and Rocko is an all time clown. I feel like when they tried to make Boondock 2, it made people think less of Boondock Saints and that’s a crime. Boondock is an awesome movie.
Pick 3: Eddie- The Departed (Movie) <VETO: GREEN BEER>
Grade- Maybe. Maybe Not. Maybe Go Fuck Yourself.
This is one of my favorite movies. It is an absolutely phenomenal movie and Ed should be thankful for the veto. The difference in strength between this pick and green beer is like drafting Sambuca over Goodfellas in an Italian draft.
Pick 4: WSD- Cillian Murphy (Actor)
Grade- BY THE ORDER
Cillian was killing the game even before he was Tommy Shelby. Not too many MAJOR roles in blockbuster movies but he just dominates the screen when he is on it. Face carved from stone. Eyes that cut through you. Cillian was my number 1 actor and I cant believe WSD took him 1st round. LOVE the pick.
Pick 5: Carl- Corned Beef (Food/Beverage)
Grade- You Tellin Me a Shrimp Fried this Rice?
How the hell do you corn beef? Great question Carl. This was the number one food pick. I don’t know a ton about Irish food, definitely low on the list of best cuisine. When I hear Irish food, I think Corned Beef. It’s a very good meal too. Corned Beef and Hash for breakfast or Cabbage for lunch or dinner. With Guinness off the board this is a good pick. Food/Beverage is very slim.
Round 1: When there are categories, you never know what you are going to get from the first round. I would love to have some corned beef and wash it down with some guinness while Cillian Murphy and I watch Boondock and Departed back to back so I think this was a phenomenal first round.
ROUND 2
Pick 6: Carl- Liam Neeson (Actor) <VETO: RUDY>, <VETO: FLASK>
Grade- Good Luck.
REMARKABLE DRAFT MOMENT. The double veto. First time we have ever seen it. And I think both were valid. Gravy is a side but Rudy and Flask aren’t “Irish” things. TBH I think the vetoes help Carl. Neither of those picks would have played great in the 2nd round because of their fringe nature. Liam Neeson is a powerhouse actor.
Pick 7: WSD- Road to Perdition (Movie)
Grade- Underrated
This is a very good movie but I’m not sure Dave is going to get any love on the graphic for it. Sure Hans is a mega star, but this movie doesn’t get thrown into a Tom Hanks convo until you are already atleast 10 movies deep. I dont think this would have come off the board before WSD’s round 3 pick, or even Round 4.
Pick 8: Eddie- Colin Farrell (Actor)
Grade- Bang On
He was absolutely getting drafted I just wasn’t sure where. You don’t think of the Irish as an attractive bunch but these actors are just handsome fellas. This is obviously a great pick but he wasn’t the 1st or 2nd actor on my board.
Pick 9: Cons- Jameson (Food/Beverage)
Grade- Post Shot Swallows To Hold Down Throw Up
The only reason this doesn’t play like Guinness does, is because people have not sworn off Guinness because it gave them alcohol poisoning in college. This is by far the top pick for Irish Whiskey, but people have BAD memories and a bad taste in their mouth from Jamo. My brother in law got me a bottle from the factory with my name on it 10 years ago, I have always had plans to crack it for a special day, but the longer it sits on the shelf the less likely I ever pop the top and more likely it stays as a display piece.
Pick 10: Chief- Irish Flag (Prop)
Grade- Fly It
Simple yet Iconic. There is nothing flashy about the irish flag but that is very fitting for the Irish. I have played many a beer game on an Irish Flag table. I couldn’t land on my top prop but this was absolutely in contention for best of the bunch. I think it will look great on the graphic as long as KenJac doesn’t put one on fire or something.
Round 2: Have not seen Carl on tilt like that in any draft, but most people don’t come out of that situation with Liam Neeson. The draft isnt won in the first two rounds but I love the start by Chief and Cons. Did Italian Ed come to play?
ROUND 3
Pick 11: Chief- Pierce Brossnan (Actor)
Grade- 007
Brosnan is my Bond. He is an absolute man rocket. Strong name. Cilian was first on my board, Pierce was number 2. Chief is cooking through 3.
Pick 12: Cons- Mikey O’neill, Snatch (Fictional Character)
Grade- Do ya like dags?
If you have seen Snatch you will love this pick. Mickey the Irish gypsie piker is an all time Brad Pitt role that probably goes under appreciated. Guy Ritchie movies are awesome and Mickey is an all time character that he has written. I have no idea how Brad Pitt spoke like that for an entire movie.
Pick 13: Eddie- Lucky the Leprechaun (Fictional Character)
Grade- Tragically Delicious
This pick is a hilarious 3rd round pick. I bet Ed and his Italian family make fun Irish people at the holidays. Lucky wasn’t even on my radar, didn’t even think of him, but honestly, I love the pick. It’s going to look so funny on the graphic that it might just make people gravitate towards Eds list.
Pick 14: WSD- Leprechaun (Fictional Character)
Grade- Haunting.
This is an awesome pick, but somehow an evil, terribly frightening Leprechaun just doesn’t hit when it comes after a cereal mascot. This is not a bad pick by any means but I was still laughing at Lucky and Dave taking another Leprechaun just made me like Eds pick even more.
Pick 15: Carl- Gangs of New York (Movie)
Grade- 5 Points
Phenomenal pick, great film. It’s a long one but it’s worth the watch. This pick was all about WSD though. Dave said it was a great movie but didn’t know it was about the Irish was HILARIOUS. Chief was floored.
Round 3: This round just makes me laugh. A suited up spy. A grimy gypsie boxer. A cereal Mascot. A horrifying depiction of a Leprechaun. Just a wild mix. I love these snake drafts so much.
ROUND 4
Pick 16: Carl- Shillelagh (Prop)
Grade- Disciplined Pick
Everything Carl does is strategic. Drops a “This will be a meatball Irish stuff draft” all while planning on taking a very Irish prop in the 4th round. Its chess not checkers. I don’t know how well this will play on the graphic but it is a solid pick. Very different from the traditional St. Pattys Day props that were expected to come off the board.
Pick 17: WSD- Kilt (Prop)
Grade- Gross
Picturing Dave’s legs in a kilt is not something I wanted to do. Kilts are very cool. Takes confidence and charisma to rock a kilt and I wish I had it in me to pull one off but I have never attempted. However, I agree with the panel here, this comes off more Scottish to me. Either way, bagpipers and kilts will steal the show when they pop up around St. Pattys weekend.
Pick 18: Eddie- Four Leaf Clover (Prop)
Grade- Get Lucky
RIP to Chiefs Grandma. Real shame he couldn’t find a four leaf to save her….Ed actually drafts better when he’s not over thinking the topic. His picks play to the graphic. And I am not calling it pandering, I think it’s just taking some of the chalk picks because his lists for each cat aren’t too in depth or cute and he ends up with a roster that looks good on the graphic.
Pick 19: Cons- Celtic Cross (Prop)
Grade- Put It In Ink
This has gotta be up there for one of the most tattooed images of all time. Celtic cross, tribal band and ‘live laugh love’ I would guess are the top 3 if you include both men and women. Doesn’t take away from it being an awesome pick. It is such a cool cross and its going to look awesome on the graphic.
Pick 20: Chief- In The Name of the Father (Movie)
Grade- (Guilford) 4
True story. Very Irish. Powerful film. This could be considered the best movie off the board. I think the Departed is more well known, and Gangs of New York has a deeper cast (than Name of the Father), but In the Name Of the Father is a phenomenal movie.
Round 4: 4 props off the board. Usually you don’t see this is in a draft with categories. I think all 5 props were great picks. I think Chief takes the cake with the flag though. I love Chiefs overall draft through 4 rounds.
ROUND 5
Pick 21: Chief- Damion O’Donovan (HISTORICAL Fictional Character)
Grade- Burrata
I am Team Chief. I like Chief, he is very smart, he does draft well, but he just can’t put together a full roster. Chief has had an awesome draft through 4 rounds but I think this totally derails him. I VERY much want to watch this movie. I am sure it’s awesome, I’m sure the character is great, but listening to Chief try to spin a real life human into a fictional character because he wasn’t the one acting was quite a performance.
Pick 22: Cons- Chris O’Dowd (Actor)
Grade- O’k
Chris O’Dowd is very funny. He is underrated. But you are taking a risk with him on the graphic. If you were to line the 5 actors from this draft for a picture, O’Dowd would very much be the “How did he get here” guy.
Pick 23: Eddie- Baileys Irish Cream (Food/Beverage)
Grade- Splash
When you know you have day drinking planned, especially on St. Pattys, and you can start the day off with a splash of Baileys in the coffee, it’s going to be a day. Baileys and Coffee, Baileys Shiver, Baileys Float. It is a desserty drink but it is one of the elite desserty alcoholic beverages and that makes it special. This is amazing 5th round value.
Pick 24: WSD- Smithwicks (Food/Beverage)
Grade- Fine
It is absolutely an very Irish beer, but it isn’t something I’ll drink outside of St. Pattys or even during it. The other 4 food/beverages picks just bury this one. Shamrock Shake would have even played better.
Pick 25 Mr. Irrelevant: Carl- Irishman Steve, Braveheart (Actor)
Grade- Relevant
I don’t know how many times the Mr. Irrelevant makes a large impact on the overall draft but Irishman Steve could take Carl’s list from very good to a favorite to win. Carl actually alludes to this pick during his second round.
Round 5: I gasped at the prospect of a trade swap. When Ed replied to Carl’s offer with “I would like a 2nd Round Pick Swap.” I felt chills go up my spine. I need a Dog Walk Snake Draft trade like I need air.
I have been STRUGGLING the last few drafts to decide on a winner post listen. Usually I have a good idea of who will be come out on top, but the last few drafts have let me up in the air. Everyones roster has some awesome picks. For WSD, Road to Perdition and Smittwicks take him out of contention. Chief was SO damn strong until his round 5 pick and really do think that my hurt his whole draft. Cons has some polarizing picks, some people think Boondock stinks and Jamo is gross. I think this comes down to Eddie vs. Carl. They called unprepared but after 5 rounds that looks like a prepared draft to me. Ed might not get any votes from actual Irish people because he’s Italian but his roster is very good. This is a feckin toss up.
